Last year I tried out a new idea, student portfolios. It seemed to work really well and I got a lot of good feedback about it, so this year we are making the portfolios again. I decided that each grade would learn about a famous artist and create the design on the front of the portfolio in the style of that famous artist. Here are some images of the portfolios from a few of the grades that have finished.
Kindergarten - Famous Artist Wassily Kandinsky
Kindergarten students created an abstract work of art in the style of famous artist Kandinsky. One of his most famous works was titled "Squares with Concentric Circles" shown here

Second Grade - Famous Artist - Vincent Van Gogh
Second grade students created a work of art on the front of the portfolios in the style of the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. One of his most famous works was titled "Sunflowers". Van Gogh actually painted more than one famous painting of sunflowers. Here are some of them shown below.

First Grad - Famous Artist - Joan Miro
First graders created art on the student portfolios in the style of abstract artist Joan Miro. He used mainly lines and shapes in his art. Below are some images of art by Joan Miro.

Fifth Grade - Famous Artist - Gustav Klimt
Fifth graders created art in the style of Klimt. One of his most famous works was titled "The Tree of Life" Fifth graders made trees in the style of Klimt for the front of the student portfolios. Below is an image of the "Tree of Life" painting

Third Grade - Famous Artist - Piet Mondrian
Third graders learned about the artist Piet Mondrian. He mainly used squares, rectangles and straight lines in his art. He used red, blue, yellow, black and white. Students created letters from in this style of art. They used the first letter of their first name. Below are some images of his works.
